Japanese actor/singer graphite pencils on Borden&Riley bristol plate 7"x9.5" (Please click the image for full view!) This portrait is finally done!! It was supposed to be done for his birthday on Oct 7th, but I got a bit carried away with the details. I had lots of fun drawing this, especially the texture on his clothing. At first I hated this smooth paper, but it does have its advantages. You get some nice light tones on it and get smoother-looking shadows. I still haven't gotten the hang of it yet, but this wasn't so bad for my first time using the paper. WIP #1 [link] WIP #2 [link] WIP #3 [link] WIP #4 [link] .................................... This portrait was also entered into *gabbyd70's Traditional Portrait Contest! |

Be what you seem to be. or if you'd like to put it more simply-Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be
Oh I do own every single graphite pencil I could find in the art store! (and pastel pencils, watercolour pencils, etc) I love my pencils! I just didn't use the really dark ones here, except for 4b on the hair and eyes. The clothing used 2B at most. I thought about darkening it before, but I decided I'm not touching the clothing anymore coz then I'll have to adjust all that texture again!
I'm still learning how to use the entire range of graphite. I used to use only HB, but I've extended my range from 4H to 4B. The really soft pencils might not have worked very well with this paper, though -- it's too slippery (more so than bristol smooth). The graphite sometimes lifts off when I shade.

"What is this, a missile launch?"
"Are you coming or going? Or.. coming, and then going? ..Or coming, and staying?"
You can piss off a king. The worst he can do is kill you. Dont piss off the pope. He can send you to hell. Nobody likes hell.
The strokes are visible because I suck at blending!
It's a good thing that I happen to like seeing pencil strokes on drawings.
