Toronto devmeet

Tue Oct 20, 2009, 8:46 PM
I went to the Toronto devMEET last saturday!

That was my first time visiting the Distillery District. I've been meaning to visit the place for a while now, so having the devmeet there was like killing two birds with one stone.

It was nice to finally see the faces behind some of the deviantart names. I'm glad I attended! :) I know I didn't speak much, but I'm just usually quiet around folks I just met. I did get to talk more with the younger folks (~rum-box, ~Animatora, *BleakSteadtler) later on when the "age 19+" group split from the "under 19" folks. I joined the "under 19" guys even though I'm technically over 19 (waaaay over, if you must know!), however, I don't drink alcohol so I was planning on going home at that point. Instead, we decided to sit around at a cafe to chat and look at each others' sketchbooks for a while. That was cool. I love looking at other people's sketchbooks, especially when they give some commentary about the drawings. :)

Hey there~! Long time no talk!:'D

I have a question - I've been working on some portraits and I've come across one of Sho where I have to draw his teeth...but they always look so unnatural D: How do you get the teeth to look so natural? xD?

Hello! :) How's the portrait drawing coming along?

I treat the teeth like it's all one piece and draw the shape around it. As much as possible, avoid drawing the lines separating the teeth from each other (sides of the teeth) as much as possible. If you do need to draw it, do it very lightly (I use a 4H pencil) It's usually those lines that make the teeth look unnatural. When drawing the jagged edges of the teeth, pay special attention to the very dark areas below the edge of the upper teeth where you can see the shadow of the inside of the mouth.

I hope that makes sense! If not, send me a note

Hey! Pretty good! It really takes a lot of practice - I can see my gradual improvement from each portrait, though it may be small. The biggest thing I recognized was how thick I was drawing my lines at first! Must be from all the anime xD~

Ohhhh. That makes a lot more sense! The whole time I was drawing each separate tooth and no matter how many times I did it it looked unnatural. I never tried it as one piece : O ! I'll definitely keep an eye on those things! Thanks so much ^_^ ~!
